Lección 7: El artículo definido the

El artículo definido the se utiliza delante de nombres específicos tanto en singular como en plural; y ante nombres que se hayan mencionado con anterioridad.

The moon es very bright tonight. (sólo hay una luna)
I thought the people were wonderful. (unas personas concretas, conocidas tanto por el que habla como por el que escucha)
She lives in my neighbourhood. The
neighbourhood is full of students. (ya se ha mencionado)

También se emplea ante nombres propios de: personas, sólo cuando nombramos a una familia por su apellido (the Smiths), ríos (the nile), mares (the Black Sea), montañas (the Alps), islas (the Canary Islands).

The va seguido de un adjetivo cuando queremos expresar una clase de gente.

Only the rich can buy expensive cars.
The Americans and the Germans are very competitive people.

Los instrumentos musicales llevan este artículo delante, pero los deportes no.

I play the flute, the piano and the guitar.
I hate playing football and tennis.

Con palabras como chapel, prison, hospital, school y market no ponemos artículo si vamos a esos sitios con el fin para el que se construyeron; pero debemos ponerlo si vamos con otros fines.

Teachers and pupils go to school, but parents go to the school to meet their children's teachers.

The también se usa con los superlativos.

This is the best wine I have ever tasted.
