I was studying at 10 o'clock yesterday

I was studying all day yesterday
He was talking on the phone for a long time

En este caso suele ir acompañado de expresiones temporales como all day, all night, the whole day, for a long time, during, etc.

While you were reading the paper, I was doing my homework

I was singing a song when it began to rain
He was writing to me when he received my e-mail
